CHAPTER 5

There are gasps, and the words tide singer are spoken again and again. The crowd stream in through the door and gather behind Mrs Bussell. They seem afraid at first, but soon realise there is strength in numbers. They are angry because of all the damage the storms have caused and now they have someone to blame.

I try to stay next to the tide singer, but I’m shoved aside. More and more people push in front of me, shouting angrily. Soon I’m at the back of the room and can hardly see the tide singer past the raging mob.

I must tell them the truth. That it was me who conjured up the wave and that the tide singers are only protecting themselves from fishing nets by driving the boats away. I try to make my way through the crowd, but I’m swept off my feet.

I’m not strong enough to push to the front, so I crawl forward between their legs. I get glimpses of the tide singer, who is cowering on the floor. I reach out for her hand, but I’m yanked back.

“Do not touch her,” Mrs Bussell shrieks above the hubbub of noise. “She may have more evil magic we know nothing of.”

Biddy Thomas prods at the tide singer with a walking stick and her daughter faints. The crowd surge forward again to get a better look and Da is almost knocked over.

“No,” I shout, but no one can hear me above the crowd’s roar of fury. Da tries to stop them, but they use some of his rope to tie the tide singer’s wrists, shouting orders all the while. It is petrifying.
